  • Overview

    The VP, Tax Manager will report to the SVP, Director of Tax (“DT”) and possess the skills necessary to direct, train and manage other tax professionals in the department.. The Tax Manager will be a key member of the financial management team and will be based at Company headquarters located in downtown Phoenix, AZ. The Tax Manager will partner with the DT and Chief Tax Officer (“CTO”) and financial management team to execute the company’s tax strategy/processes and assist with all responsibilities of the tax department which include: the tax provision process, tax compliance, estimated tax payments process, internal controls, internal/external audits and forecasting/tax planning projects. We seek a true business partner, who brings a broad tax knowledge base and the energy to effectively lead and manage.


    • Manage the preparation of the consolidated and entity by entity tax provision calculations under ASC 740 and the related disclosures for interim and annual financial/regulatory statements
    • Review all necessary computations supporting the tax accounts by legal entity
    • Monitor the application of ASC 740 and other accounting pronouncements relative to tax
    • Assist in developing and maintaining strong SOX/internal controls over tax processes and information
    • Assist with the review and maintenance of regulatory calculations as they relate to tax accounts, which includes stress testing as needed
    • Manage the preparation and timely filing of federal, state and local tax compliance.
    • Manage the preparation and timely filing of estimated tax payments
    • Assist with audits, examinations and inquiries by various taxing authorities and jurisdictions, including required internal and external coordination.
    • Assist with tax research in response to requests and tax questions from business areas and Finance, including sales and use tax, property tax, fees, assessments, 1099s, withholding, federal income tax, state income tax, etc.
    • Assist with creating, maintaining and enhancing the tax department’s documentation and processes, including level of automation
    • Contribute to the tax aspects of acquisitions, divestitures, mergers and capital transactions by identifying risks and opportunities
    • Proactively work with the DT and CTO to advise senior management regarding tax matters affecting the Company, including implications and recommendations.
    • Actively participate in the building of a professional, proactive, responsive, technically strong tax organization.
    • Establish effective working relationships for the tax organization across Company functions and business units


    •  Strong working knowledge of the following: U.S. federal, state and local taxes; accounting for income taxes; federal, state and local tax audits; M&A transactions; strategy and planning; controls and processes; systems (including automation)
    • Demonstration of progressive career growth
    • Excellent project management skills and experience managing multiple projects with competing priorities
    • Strong, demonstrated technical competency to achieve business objectives
    • Demonstrated understanding of business implications of key actions and decisions as they relate to tax corporate structure
    • Bachelor’s degree in Tax, Accounting, Business Administration, or related experience
    • Five to six years of tax accounting experience with a major accounting firm or corresponding in-house experience with a publicly traded company (bank or bank holding company experience is a plus)
    • Corp Tax or similar tax software competence
    • Current CPA
